Proper ground preparation is an important step to ensure a successful food plot. Remove existing vegetation by tilling or chemical application. The seed bed should be fairly smooth to ensure good seed to soil contact when planting.
Yes, applying fertilizer is a good practice. In general, an application of 9-24-30 fertilizer at 100# per acre is a good start. The best way to determine the most effective fertilizer for your area is to perform a soil test (many extension agents, coops & local seed dealers perform this service).
A soil test is the best way to determine if your soil needs to have lime applied. A good rule of thumb is that wooded areas usually need an application of lime (100# per acre). Your pH should be between 6.5 – 7.0. If your soil pH is less than 6.5, you should apply lime.
This depends on the mix that you plant. While many food plot mixes are annual mixes (they last one growing season), Farmscapes® also offers some perennial mixes which will last for several years before needing to be planted. Please see our Product Page for which mixes are annual & which are perennial. For advantages of annual or perennial mixes, please see our What to Plant page.
Once established, Remington Brand will provide excellent habitat for several years. After time, if weeds or a thinning stand become an issue, it may be beneficial to replant the area.
Habitat plots should be planted in the spring, allowing time for full growth. Food plots can be planted in the spring for summer feeding or in the fall for late fall & winter feeding. Trailblazer is an excellent blend to plant in the summer for fresh, fall forage.
